Seminar Meeting 2011.10.06

First of all, Congratulation to both Socheath and Roger!
Socheath and his lovely wife finally got married this summer.
Roger and Chie had also official commit with each other to live happily ever after.

Updates for the upcoming:

  • Statistic Analysis Lecture will from October 13th 2011 (Thursday on 5th period).

Nassar will be in charge of lecturing so please attend to show your support.

  • The seminar for the students from fourth semester will be cancel on October 13th.

This week summary:

The first presenter was Maria; she discussed the current issue of “telework for continuity of operations in Japan”.   In depth, it cover how Japanese continue to work (telework) even during after major nature disasters or throughout emergency period.  Disaster management system (DMS) is another main focus of this particular paper.

Film was the second presenter; he is interested in “cloud computing & web 2.0 in Thailand”.  He focused on Thailand because Thailand is a developing country which the need of demand is also expanding simultaneously; therefore, the introducing of cloud computing & web 2.0 is one of their solutions to meet the needs of Thai people.

Elaine should be the third presenter but due to lack of time, she will be presenting next time.

5th period seminar wrap up:
Professor Mitomo started off with telling “how ICT can be utilize for strengthening Japanese economy”.  The purpose of this research is to avoid unnecessary panic when the next major earthquakes hit Japan.
Then, Professor Mitomo looked through our “list of contents” and give advices individually.
Those in the fourth semester, please work on literary review/survey!

Seminar Meeting 2011.9.29

In the first seminar class of the autumn semester for 2011 we welcomed three new students and set our plans for the semester to come.

  • Welcome new students!We have three new students join our seminar class this semester. Hitomi form Japan, Ren from Korea, and Thuy from Vietnam joined us on Thursday. Welcome ladies!
  • Introduction to the seminar classTo start off the class (our zemi), professor Mitomo explained the purpose of the seminar class. This semester we will be doing mostly student presentations.
  • PresentationsPresentations are usually about 10 minutes long. The slides should be in English, but the presentation can be either in English or Japanese. 3rd semester students will take over the first 2 weeks of presentations followed by the new students and the 2nd semester students. Presentation order:
    • 1st week (10.6): Maria, Film, Elaine
    • 2nd week (10.13): Socheat, Lee, and, if there is time, Thuy
    • 3rd week (10.20): Hitomi, Ren
    • 4th week (10.27): Millya, Wenjin, Riyung
  • Extra statistics classThere will most likely be an extra (non-credited) class on statistical analysis with a focus on thesis writing. This class is NOT mandatory. The details will be discussed with Nassar next week.
    • If you can, please leave the 5th period on Thursdays open.
  • Upcoming eventsOn a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon to be specified, those wishing to will be given the opportunity to visit the NTT showroom. The exact date of the study visit will be decided once our schedules have been solidified. Again, this event is not mandatory.
  • Welcome nomikaiThe date for the welcome party will be decided next week (Responsible: Tong)
  • The websiteThere was a brief introduction on the zemi’s website, http://digitalsociety.jpFilm explained the registration process and how to use the website, and will be in charge of giving access to the new students. (Responsible: Film)Next steps for the website:
    • We need to make a Japanese-language version
    • Everyone is asked to bring in suggestions for a new logo!
  • Omiyage time!Cake-eating is a tradition for our zemi.The debate on the best pineapple cake is as yet unresolved. Taiwanese students are asked to bring more cakes for comparative research.
  • ITS conference in BudapestThe professor brought up the International Telecommunications Society’s Regional Conference held in Budapest earlier in September, which Tong, Manit, and Maria attended.Students wishing to attend other conferences are encouraged to look up theITS Regional Conference in Perth, Australia (November 13-16)AEA Conference “Towards a Digital Society” in Luxembourg (December 1-2)ITS Regional Conference in New Delhi, India (February 23-24, 2012)

    Financing for conference attendance in case of a paper presentation is given only to PhD students. However, privately-financed Master’s students can ask at CIE for other subsidies available to them.

  • Classes at GSAPSA clarification was made concerning the contents of the two courses given by Professor Mitomo this semester; while the courses are described as ‘introductory’ and ‘advanced’, this distinction is not so clear in practice and students are free to take whichever they want.
  • Sub-zemiA second session was held during the 5th period for 4th semester Master’s students to discuss their thesis proposals with the Professor.
