ICT literacy and Education in India

In my essay, I’m forcusing on utility gap such as ICT literacy in India, examining devices access such as PC and Mobile. Also, I’m trying to find the  solutions to alleviate the gap, in terms of effective and efficient educational opportunity among citizen.

Since 1980s, India has recorded the economic development promoting ICT industry as its national development core engine. Nowadays, ICT industry in India is recognized as one of the successful model. Indeed, this industry has been contributed in many economic positive impact inside and outside of the country.

On the other hand, it is also observable to find the utility gap among the citizen.  Mobile phone seems to spread rather than PC. In the global network society, who have the benefit? Are there any left community to catch up this benefit? In the case of India, Internet process is getting much more common administration tool and general infrastructure among the people day by day. Many opportunities are announced and taken the process through ICT application.

Therefore, it could be said ICT device access is nowadays a common tool to be utilized by citizen to gather & dispatch information, catch up opportunities and be on the process. Beyond various languages and life styles in India, this topic can be discussed not only on digital divide, service & product provision by the company. But I focus much on educational opportunity provision as the effective intervention.

The fourth semester students all handed in their theses and now only have the oral presentation to go before they can finish. Well done everyone!

The professor described the process of the oral exam and reminded interviewees to especially focus on their contribution, and also bring an extra copy of their thesis in case some specific point needs to be discussed.

Advice to thesis writers from 4th-semester students

The fourth semester students had advice for the rest of the seminar class:

  • Start early and stay healthy, and you’ll finish just fine
  • Write down your structure, you’ll find out you have a lot less to write than you think
  • While writing, put in your references immediately, because you will not be able to remember them afterwards
  • Start your reading early

Presentations: Hitomi and Thuy

First semester students Hitomi and Thuy did their presentations today

Hitomi: Digital Divide in India

This presentation concerned the discrepancy between macro-level reporting on the digital divide in India, according to which the divide is narrowing, and micro-level observations, which show that the divide is getting wider.

In the discussion, the issues of digital divide definition, and the differences between a hypothesis and a research question were brought up.

Thuy: Leap-frogging as a way to combat the digital divide in Vietnam

The next presentation also concerned the digital divide, but from a different perspective. The main focus was on the advantages and disadvantages of using leap-frogging as a strategy for combating the digital divide.

The different definitions of digital divide were again brought up, and then the possible problems concerning the gathering of reliable data were discussed, as well as some potential solutions.
