Course Description / Objectives

This course is oriented to gain a deep insight into utilization of ICT in civic life and business, and to investigate policies for supporting it. It will focus on two major areas: the economic analysis of information and telecommunications; and the effects of information technology on economies, society and people’s lives. Policies are considered as the application of economic ideas to promote further utilization of ICT.
Applications of regulatory frameworks should be limited to the cases where the market mechanism does not work properly.
Students can employ an interdisciplinary approach, making use of materials from various academic areas such as economics, marketing, psychology, regional and environmental sciences, and socioeconomic planning.
The process starts with a hypothesis for research. Students are requested to carefully examine current and projected conditions in the telecommunications markets or ICT usage in people’s life, with an eye toward identifying potential problems, then proceed to a survey of previous studies in an effort to develop possible solutions. In addition to the course’s economics-related materials, students are expected to learn statistics as needed. Qualitative analysis will be supplemented with theoretical and/or quantitative analysis.
Students involved in the course have come from the human and social sciences as well as the engineering and natural sciences. Foreign students and working students are also welcome.
Each student’s achievement will be evaluated regularly and his or her plans updated to reflect new goals. Internships are available. Students lacking analytical tools can join study groups, which are run voluntarily by students. Students are strongly recommended to present their research results in an academic conference or submit a paper to an academic journal.
