About Professor Hitoshi MITOMO

Hitoshi Mitomo is Professor of Telecommunications Economics and Policy at Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies (GSAPS), Waseda University. He is the Director of the Institute for Digital Society (IDS), Waseda University. He was a visiting Professor at Center for Information and Communication Research, Stockholm School of Economics in 2007. He is a council member of Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) and has been involved in policy-making processes related to ICT and the media.

He holds a Master’s degree in Environment Science and a Doctorate in Engineering. His research has covered a wide range of socio-economic and regulatory issues of ICT deployment and utilization.

His current research focuses on the measurement of the social and economic impacts of ICT. He is also interested in microeconomic analysis of telecommunications such as formal analysis of network externalities and pricing in telecommunications markets, as well as the applications of behavioral economics to media access and the usage of telecommunications service.

In policy-related meetings organized by MIC, he was involved in various aspects of ICT policies such as mobile number portability, universal service, ICT development and utilization in rural areas, digital divide, economic effect of digital terrestrial broadcasting, digital dividend, spectrum auction, etc.
