Professor Mitomos Zemi is a multi-national, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary academic student seminar with all research topics connected by the subject of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). With each student given more than one opportunity to present their research interest, it is a place where we can critically analyze, offer advice to, deepen our understanding of and build confidence in our chosen topics. It is also a great opportunity to learn about certain issues from different cultural perspectives.

Mitomo seminar provides opportunities to study from the aspect of Information Communication Technology and Economics in the field of International Relation. In this University and in national-wide, it is rare opportunity. The more ICT develops, the more necessity is coming up to re-think ICT related issues inside and outside of the country in IR flame work, therefore the seminar is providing priceless study environment to us. In this seminar, multi-national students are studying together, then, new point of views are given through the discussions in English and Japanese. Also, this environment gives us a lot time to think proper manner to discuss and communicate with multi-national members, therefore I think we can grow up here.

This seminar is diverse, intensive and presentation oriented. Diversity doesnt only mean the seminar members' nationalities but also topics and our interests. Since I joined the seminar last Fall (2012), I have been making presentations more than the 4-term-time. It is a good practice.

Motomo seminar consists of the diversity of the nationality and of the interests. From the students' research, I could have found that ICT really covers wide range of social dimensions from the economic and politic issues to our close cultural ones. Though only one month had passed after my entrance, now I am certain that the hints to my research will be found after learning in this seminar.

Prof. Mitomo’s seminar attracts students from different countries around the world gather here to do specific research on their own academic interests, which are not only on ICT but also on related fields. We have seminar class in two forms, one is mainly for MA students, who usually do presentations on their research interests along with discussions, questions and advice; the other is group work led by PhD students, together with MA students, we discuss our projects and related subjects, aiming to make great progress in academic research. Besides, we also have other activities after class, such as welcome party for new students, field trips and etc. It’s a place where we can enjoy study, communication, and grow up together.

Professor Mitomo’s seminar is very challenging, because we are requested to improve our skills in presentation and group works. But the seminar is also very interesting, because there are many different views expressed by many foreign students. At each class meeting, everybody including myself is enlightened by new perspectives. I am sure this seminar will change every member’s way of thinking as well as negotiation skills which will be useful for our future career.

Mitomo seminar class to me is more than a classroom. It offers a lot of opportunities for the development of academic research as well as interpersonal skills. With presentation-based, each of the students are given a slot to present his own research while other fellow students are there to give constructive comments and suggestions. We learn how to present our ideas as well as accept those of others. It is useful when we present our studies at international conferences. Basically, Mitomo seminar is a sound preparation for young scholars in order to obtain relevant skills beneficial to their future career.

This website is a collaborative project by the students of the Economics and Policies Towards Utilization of Info-Communications Technologies Seminar at the Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies (GSAPS) of Waseda University, Tokyo. We use this website to showcase our seminar’s activities, and to communicate with each other and the world. Hopefully this website can give you an idea of what our seminar is like.

Seminar circles are a system used by Waseda University to bring together students with similar academic interests so that they can discuss their research. In our seminar (or, as we usually call it, our “zemi”) we have the opportunity to present our research progress, to test the strength of our ideas, and to challenge our limits. Being part of a zemi is more than just a tool for the completion of a master thesis; it is the space where we all become members of the academic community.

The Economics and Policies towards Utilization of Info- Communications Technologies Seminar led by professor Hitoshi Mitomo is the seminar group for GSAPS students with a specific academic interest in telecommunications and beyond. We meet every Thursday to discuss our research progress, academic activities relevant to our subjects – such as conferences and study visits, and the latest industry updates; after all, keeping up with telecom news is quite a feat in itself!

A seminar is not a static study group. It changes depending on its members and what interests them, so every time new students join us, the zemi changes to suit the needs of the current group. Currently, we cover subjects ranging from cloud computing to social media advertising to smart grids. Here is an overview of what the zemi members are up to:

If you would like to know more about our zemi, this website is the place to start. We are looking forward to hear from you!
